The story of Razia Sultan, the first and last female ruler of Delhi Sultanate begins with a brief introduction of the era in which this story is set.Delhi is ruled by Emperor Iltutmish, Razias father, a visionary, who had the courage to choose Razia as his successor in an era where a woman being crowned emperor was inconceivable.Iltutmish addresses his subjects on the eve of Eid and announces that he was going to replace the expensive gold coins issued by his predecessor Qutb-ud-din Aibak with silver coins. This announcement is not well received by the Queen Mother Shamshad Begum who fears it would wipe out the name of her deceased husband Qutb-ud-din Aybak from the pages of history. She expresses her reservations to her daughter Qutb, Iltutmish's wife who is thrilled at the prospect of being able to celebrate Eid with her husband after years.
